Travel Tips

Tipping Across Borders:
International Rules of Gratuities

- When in Rome... Tipping customs change from country to country. Always consult a guidebook to learn about the common cultural practices of your destination.

- Check your bill. Many hotels and restaurants in Europe or Asia automatically add a 15% service charge to the bill.

- Hotel Concierges are generally tipped $5 or $10 for providing specific services, like securing theater tickets or dinner reservations. Pay them daily or at the end of your stay.

- They're just like us! It may sound painfully obvious, but you should generally tip more for good service, less for poor service. Don't forget: "tip" is an acronym for, "to insure promptness."

- When in doubt... tip more rather than less. It's better to offend with generosity than with miserliness.
